Single-Vehicle Run-Off-Road Crash Prediction Model Associated with Pavement Characteristics

Abstract:

This study aims to evaluate the impact of pavement physical characteristics on the frequency of single-vehicle run-off-road (ROR) crashes in two-lane separated rural highways. In order to achieve this goal and to introduce the most accurate crash prediction model (CPM), authors have tried to develop generalized linear models, including the Poisson regression (PR), negative binomial regression (NBR)), and non-linear negative binomial regression models. Besides exposure parameters, the examined pavement physical characteristics explanatory variables contain pavement condition index (PCI), international roughness index (IRI) and ride number (RN). The forward procedure was conducted by which the variables were added to the core model one by one. In the non-linear procedure and at each step, 39 functional forms were checked to see whether the new model gives better fitness than the core/previous model. Several measures were taken to assess the fitness of the model; In addition, other measures were employed to estimate an external model validation and an error structure. Results showed that in PR and NBR models, variables coefficients were not significant. Findings of the suggested nonlinear model confirm that PCI, as an objective variable, follows the experts anticipation (i.e., better pavement manner associates with less ROR crashes). Finally, it should be noted that the roughness variable was insignificant at the assumed significance level, so it had no contribution to ROR crashes. The results imply that improving the pavement condition leads to a more probable decrease in the ROR crashes frequency.

The Effect of Roadside Elements on Driver Behavior and Run-Off-the-Road Crash Severity

Roadside vegetation provides numerous environmental and psychological benefits to drivers. Previous studies have shown that natural landscapes can effectively lower crash rates and cause less stress and frustration to the driver. However, runoff the road crashes resulting in a collision with a tree are twice as likely to result in a fatality, thus reinforcing the need to examine the placement o...

Prediction of the Surface Run off in Semirom Mehregerd Watershed Using ARIMA Model

By understanding the temporal and spatial variations of water resources in a region, the better management and planning of water resources and water consumptions can be done. Time series modeling, if used correctly, will lead to acceptable results in this regard. For this purpose, the monthly runoff time series for 28 years was prepared at the hydrometric stations of Mehregerd region and the pr...

Free and forced vibration analysis on finite element model of an off-road vehicle

In the present paper, the modal analysis on a full finite element model of an off-road vehicle. This vehicle was modeled in the CATIA software and then meshed in the HYPERMESH software. The free vibration analysis was conducted by the ABAQUS software. By applying an external displacement, the forced vibration analysis was also performed. As a result, natural frequencies and shape modes were ext...

Off-Road Vehicle Crash Risk during the Six Months after a Birthday

BACKGROUND Off-road vehicles are popular and thrilling for youth outside urban settings, yet sometimes result in a serious crash that requires emergency medical care. The relation between birthdays and the subsequent risk of an off-road vehicle crash is unknown. METHODS We conducted a population-based before-and-after longitudinal analysis of youth who received emergency medical care in Ontar...

Pavement performance prediction model development for Tehran

Highways and in particular their pavements are the fundamental components of the road network. They require continuous maintenance since they deteriorate due to changing traffic and environmental conditions. Monitoring methods and efficient pavement management systems are needed for optimizing maintenance operations. Pavement performance prediction models are useful tools for determining the op...

Dynamic Vehicle Simulation to Evaluate Countermeasure Systems for Run-Off-Road Crashes

An important part of ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems, formerly IVHS) is the development of collision avoidance systems. These systems continuously sense the dynamic state of the vehicle and the roadway situation, and they assess the potential for a collision. When the system determines that an emergency situation might be developing, it wams the driver to take evasive action. Such count...
